The sale that has produced nine Royal Ascot winners in just eight years, as well as our own Listed-winner PUROSANGUE

As the first filly for Opulence Ladies, we were determined to find a leading lady to set the standard as our flag bearer, and we couldn’t be happier with our choice. An elegant daughter of CALYX, our filly is a real beauty with a fantastic physical and the speed to match.

She marks the first chapter of a brand new all ladies’ syndicate for us at Opulence, which will be run by women for women. It was only right therefore that we chose a female trainer for her, and so she goes into training with Australian-born Jane Chapple-Hyam, who has had success at Stakes level almost every year since taking out her training licence in 2005, saddling her first multiple Group 1 winner in 2021 with Saffron Beach in the Sun Chariot Stakes and the following season in the Prix Rothschild.

Our intention was to find an early two-year-old type that could make it to the track relatively quickly and get the syndicate up and running. Going by the impression given by her consignors, she certainly has the potential to make it to the big days and all going well we will aim to win a 5f maiden with her. If she shows good ability then the dream is to see her at Royal Ascot.

She was remarkably good value at only £42,000 and we felt that she went very much under the radar at Goffs. Having been one of the last to run on what was then very soft ground, she still managed to put in a rapid first furlong before tiring in the less than ideal conditions, and it was this untapped potential that caught our eye.

Pedigree

She descends from the exceptional family of ALMOND BROOK - a daughter of SPACE TIME who produced five winners, three of which were Stakes performers and several of whom are proven broodmares themselves laying claim to multiple Group winners. The family’s propensity to produce black-type performers when put with quality stallions suggests that our filly has every chance as a daughter of CALYX, having already shown potential with twice-winning ALPINE GIRL, who is by ACCLAMATION. 

A much younger stallion with an exquisite pedigree himself, CALYX lends himself to being a top sire and made a brilliant start to his first season last year. Indeed he is already claiming seven stakes performers to his name, including three Group winners and a spectacular 53% winners to runners strike-rate. He was unbeaten himself at two, including the Coventry Stakes, and it was a pastern injury picked up in the Group 2 Sandy Lane that stopped him retaining that record at three. The fact that he still managed to take second place that day showed his fortitude, and it is this similar attitude that seems to be apparent in our filly.
