AZURE ANGEL makes a bold bid at Chelmsford

AZURE ANGEL made an impressive bid from the back of the field in the British EBF Fillies’ Handicap at Chelmsford on Sunday, defying a number of difficulties on the way.

Drawn wide, she missed the break and was forced to take up a position at the rear of the field. With a rapid change of tactics, jockey Jack Mitchell seized a gap on the rail before being badly hampered by another horse. The duo recovered quickly to make a challenge in the final furlong, and showed a remarkable turn of foot to snatch the race from HOLY FIRE by a head.

It was an absolutely thrilling performance and suggests that there is far more to come from the HARRY ANGEL filly, who we hope to see at Stakes level in the hands of trainer Roger Varian soon.

AZURE ANGEL has now earned her owners nearly £18,000 in prize money and boasts a TimeForm Rating of 99, from an initial purchase price of only 24,000 GNS at Tattersalls. She was bred by Tina and Clive Cox, who trained HARRY ANGEL himself, and own the dam, SILKEN SKIES.

A huge well done to all of her connections!

AZURE ANGEL stepped up on reappearance run after a further 8 weeks off and did well under the circumstances, value for extra as a result, also forced into a change of tactics after a rare tardy start, her record now 3-5 (all wins on all-weather); raced wide, in rear, switched to inner end of back straight, still plenty to do entering straight, headway when carried left over 1f out, short of room soon after, led final 50 yds; can't be hit too hard by the assessor and is capable of following up.

A useful contest, the 2 of these who aren't 3-y-os making the frame but it was an improving pair from the younger generation who fought it out, the winner doing well having not had the clearest of runs in the straight.
