Sovereign Sea Sets Sail for Victory in Newcastle Debut
What a promising start in the Opulence Thoroughbreds silks it was by Sovereign Sea, storming home in a useful maiden on Friday evening at Newcastle Racecourse.
The exceptionally bred son of Ten Sovereigns had previously suffered several small setbacks during his two-year-old training campaign, which resulted in him making his belated debut as a three-year-old, the Opulence Owners’ patience was rewarded however as he effortlessly bounded four and a half lengths clear of his rivals on the home straight.
He showed an incredible attitude on debut and looks like an incredibly smart prospect going forward.
Roger Varian noted post-race “Congratulations for the win, I am delighted that he won and that he looked very good in doing so. It is likely that he can run again this year”

SOVEREIGN SEA (IRE) (50,000Y, €200,000 2-y-o: by Ten Sovereigns: fourth foal: half-brother to useful 1½m-1¾m winner Point Nepean (by Camelot): dam, ran twice at 2 yrs, half-sister to smart winner up to 9f Steinbeck) was all the rage in the betting and made a winning start with ease, not having a great deal to beat but evidently an above-average sort for a good yard; prominent, travelled well, led over 1f out, quickened clear, had plenty in hand; sure to progress.
A steadily-run minor event and it proved easy pickings for the well-connected newcomer that dominated the betting.
